A welcome from our chairperson

The mantra of a thriving youth centre

Once again, we’re delighted to review the activities and impact of our work over the past year.

We’re fast approaching our 90th year. We give thanks for the blessings we’ve had year-on-year and that we can continue to support young people in the Clapham Park area of Lambeth.

I recently visited the members at each of our evening sessions. Chatting to them, they were clear about the value of our work. Many I spoke to at Inters were proud to tell me they’ve been coming for more than six years and valued the fact that the building and leaders were ‘always there’. It’s a place they can bring friends and make new ones. They value the opportunity to enjoy experiences that aren’t open to others like them.

We’ve been providing support and opportunities like this for generations of young people - a number of current members had been recommended by family who attended the centre when they were young, or had been part of our TYLAP (Trainee Youth Leader Apprenticeship Programme).

They enjoy the building, which is well maintained and up-to-date - and currently being adapted (as funds allow). The members enjoy cooking meals and cakes in our well-equipped kitchen, and I was able to share a (very nice) meal at one of the sessions. We are fortunate to be able to take our members to Wey Island for time away from London, water sports, barbeques and quality time to build relationships.

The work in two local junior schools is ongoing. We are being invited to expand this. You will read about this off-site work as well as the work with children and young people that is carried out at the Centre by our partners. We are happy to be able to share our work and building with others.

All this wouldn’t be possible without our dedicated band of paid workers and volunteers. These include several young leaders who attend sections for older young people but volunteer to help at sections for younger age groups. We encourage and support them in this to help them develop confidence and leadership skills. Thanks also to those who have supported us with their specialist skills and knowledge, in particular Tony Carnegie who supports and guides members in our Inters and Seniors to make music in our music studio.

My fellow trustees and I recognise we are merely custodians of the work. Thank you to our corporate and individual funders who have enabled us to provide all you’ll read about in this review. It will come as no surprise that the competition for funds to support voluntary work has become harder. We are all affected by the cost-of-living crisis and appreciate your donations which are essential for the continuation of our work.

Thanks also to those of you who support and join us with your prayers - for the work, the young people, their families, and the community. I pray that God will meet your needs as you help us to meet ours and will bless and provide for you as He has done for us. Your contributions have been put to good use and are helping us to provide support the members and be part of their lives.

Thanks and blessings.
